A 500-gallon concrete-vault diesel tank feeding a CAT standby generator at one of EBMUD's Oakland facilities. We cleaned the tank, removed the water and sediment that had settled on the bottom, filtered the fuel, and treated it. The three sample jars pictured — dark on the left, clear on the right — are from this tank, before and after.

EBMUD has since approved a second tank cleaning plus polishing across several more generator units at their West Oakland facilities, grouped into one trip. We have also scoped their broader West Area generator fleet.

Why PSPS season matters

Public Safety Power Shutoffs can take East Bay facilities off grid power for days, not hours. A generator that passes its weekly exercise cycle can still stall under sustained load when the fuel pickup reaches the water and sludge on the tank floor. Bay Area fog and marine air make condensation in vented tanks a year-round problem. The time to clean and polish is before October, not during the outage.
