Sediment and Particulates: What's Really Settling in Your Fuel Tank

Every fuel tank collects some amount of sediment over time. Dirt, rust, tank scale, sand, and construction debris settle to the bottom, and depending on tank access and ventilation, that buildup can accumulate for years without anyone noticing — until fuel level drops low enough to pull it into the system.

Where sediment comes from

Some sediment enters from outside the tank through open access ports or inadequate ventilation. Some forms inside the tank itself, as rust develops on interior steel surfaces or as degraded fuel leaves solid residue behind. Fuel delivered from a supplier can also carry a small amount of particulate contamination, which is one reason tank condition can decline gradually even with a consistent fuel source.

Why sediment is a problem

Sediment pulled into a fuel system accelerates filter wear, can damage injectors and pumps, and in tanks that are rarely drawn down low, tends to go unnoticed until a fuel level drop exposes it. For emergency generators and other equipment that runs infrequently, sediment sitting at the tank bottom is exactly the kind of hidden problem that doesn't show up until the equipment is actually needed.

Addressing it

Filtration removes sediment suspended in the fuel during polishing. Tank cleaning goes a step further, physically removing sediment and residue from the tank's interior surfaces. Which approach is right depends on how much has accumulated and how it's distributed — an assessment and bottom sample are the fastest way to find out.
