Gasoline Storage Problems: Phase Separation and Ethanol Moisture

Stored gasoline has a different set of problems than diesel, largely because of ethanol. Most gasoline sold today contains ethanol, which is hygroscopic, meaning it actively absorbs moisture from the surrounding air. That characteristic creates a specific failure mode that diesel doesn't share: phase separation.

What phase separation is

Ethanol-blended gasoline can only hold so much water before the ethanol-water mixture separates from the gasoline entirely, dropping to the bottom of the tank as a distinct layer. Once phase separation occurs, that bottom layer is no longer usable fuel, and the gasoline remaining above it has also lost octane and stability. Phase separation isn't a gradual decline — once the saturation point is reached, it happens relatively quickly.

Other gasoline storage issues

Beyond phase separation, stored gasoline is prone to sediment accumulation and varnish formation, similar to diesel, along with a general loss of volatility that makes stale gasoline harder to ignite reliably over time.

Why gasoline service requires extra care

Gasoline's vapor characteristics and flammability mean fuel polishing and tank cleaning for gasoline systems requires grounded, appropriately rated equipment and added safety precautions that aren't the same as diesel service. If you're storing gasoline in equipment, generators, or marine tanks that sit for extended periods, periodic sampling is the most reliable way to catch a phase separation problem before it affects the equipment.
