Fuel Degradation: Why Old Fuel Doesn't Always Come Back

Diesel and gasoline are chemically stable for a period of time, but not indefinitely. Long-term storage leads to oxidation, darkening, and the formation of varnish and gum-like residues, particularly when fuel sits for extended periods without being used or treated.

What degradation looks like

Degraded fuel often darkens in color and can develop a stronger odor than fresh fuel. Varnish and gum deposits form as oxidation byproducts and can coat tank surfaces, fuel lines, and injectors. In advanced cases, degraded fuel loses some of its combustibility, which affects engine performance even after filtration.

What filtration can and can't fix

Fuel polishing removes water, sediment, and microbial contamination effectively, and it can meaningfully improve fuel that's affected primarily by those issues. What filtration cannot do is reverse chemical oxidation or restore fuel that has become chemically unstable. In those cases, the practical option is often partial or complete disposal rather than continued attempts at recovery.

Knowing which situation you're in

The only reliable way to know whether stored fuel is a good candidate for polishing or headed toward disposal is to test it. A fuel sample and assessment, with laboratory analysis if warranted, gives a straight answer before money is spent on a service that won't hold up.
